Toy Drive Kicks Off in Grand Style With Human Nature, Blessing From Mayor Goodman

Day 1 Starts With Big Guests, Big Donations

November 29, 2018

“I’m just wondering if he’s wearing an adult diaper up there because that would add another element to it,” joked Human Nature star Phil Burton as he and his fellow vocalists watched Chet Buchanan prepare for his annual jaunt to the top of a 30-foot platform in the parking lot of NV Energy.

The platform is Buchanan’s “holiday home,” so to speak, where he’ll spend 12 days and nights during the 20th annual KLUC Toy Drive.

On the ground, Burton and the rest of Human Nature – Toby Allen, Andrew Tierney and Michael Tierney – serenaded Buchanan with renditions of “White Christmas” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” as Buchanan was hoisted to his perch, courtesy of an NV Energy boom truck.

Although the 7:30 a.m. sendoff was meant to mark the official start of the toy drive, donations had begun pouring into the parking lot since sunrise.

Las Vegas’ Hirschi Masonry was first to deliver a truck full of toys and bicycles to Buchanan, as smaller donations helped fill one of the two Coca-Cola trucks parked nearby the platform.

Human Nature carried four, 53-inch Teddy bears to the Toy Drive. The Venetian headliners nicknamed the bears “Fluffy,” “53,” “Mikey,” and “Curtis.” Nearby, representatives from Sands Cares, one of Toy Drive’s biggest supporters, organized donations with the help of KLUC staff.

Donations continued throughout the morning, with Tropical Smoothie donating 30 bikes and 1,000 coupons for the first 1,000 people who dropped off toys.

Even Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman rose early to drop off a gift and wish Buchanan luck.

“It wouldn’t be a Toy Drive, officially, if we didn’t get the blessing of [the mayor],” Buchanan said as he introduced Goodman to the crowd.

The mayor thanked Buchanan for kicking off Toy Drive on a somewhat rainy day in Las Vegas, adding that the city could use the rain but praising the host for braving the winter weather once again.

One of the day’s largest donations came just after Buchanan reached his post, when Farhan Naqvi of Naqvi Injury Law arrived with his team to present a $20,000 check and two U-Haul trucks filled with toys and 250 bicycles.

By 8:30 a.m., 356 bicycles had been collected.

“This is our sixth year doing Toy Drive,” Naqvi said. “It never ceases to amaze me how this community comes together, in this city your friends become your family.”
